Karen Williams, MA, Dipl Psych, MBACP, UKCP Reg
Karen Williams is a qualified and experienced counsellor and psychotherapist, a graduate of the Centre for Counselling and Psychotherapy Education in London. CCPE is the largest training centre for transpersonal and integrative psychotherapy in the UK and is a member organisation of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). BACP and UKCP are the professional associations which accredit various trainings offered by CCPE. Karen is a member of BACP and a registered member of UKCP. Her MA is in Jungian and Post-Jungian Studies from the University of Essex. For more information about the transpersonal and integrative aspects of this way of working, please see the Psychotherapy and Counselling pages.
More recently, Karen completed EMDR therapist training with Matt Wesson of The EMDR Academy, which is an EMDR Europe accredited training. She is a member of the EMDR UK & Ireland Association, the professional association for EMDR in the United Kingdom. Having completed the basic training, she is now working towards full accreditation with the Association. In addition, she is currently reading for an MSc degree in Psychological Trauma at the University of Chester.
Karen has wide experience in both short and long-term work with adult clients. She has worked for several agencies in and around London including over two years of voluntary counselling work with NHS patients in the IAPT service at a GP surgery. She continues to consult with private clients in London and Glastonbury.
Her therapeutic approach is relational and holistic. She includes psychodynamic and Jungian depth work, cognitive work, and creative techniques, as appropriate for each individual. Being person-centred, she is respectful and empathetic of the client’s worldview and spiritual interests. Creating the safe and comfortable space that facilitates a person in addressing whatever it is that’s brought them to therapy is so important. Karen abides by the codes of conduct and ethical practice of BACP, UKCP, and the EMDR Association UK & Ireland.
Karen’s special interests are depression and anxiety, somatisation and medically unexplained symptoms (MUS), relationship issues, crisis intervention, and the many manifestations of stress and psychological trauma. In particular, she has wide experience of working with the kind of complex trauma that can result from abuse in childhood or adulthood. Karen also works one-to-one and with groups to facilitate self-development and personal growth from a transpersonal perspective.
Karen Williams’ first degree was in Biochemistry, and she has also participated in degree courses at London and Kathmandu Universities in religious studies, Buddhist studies and Himalayan languages. An avid sailor since childhood, she has sailed and raced professionally. She worked for many years in the City of London, and has travelled widely by land and sea. Her most precious things include personal growth, compassionate and ethical practice, and spending time in wild places.
